This is not a book full of grand battles and epic historical moments; it is something more. It is a book detailing the lives of ordinary, local hometown boys who were taken too soon and who will, thanks to Steve, never be forgotten.

The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I
There is more to the history of Coweta County than just the beautiful antebellum homes and the avoidance of General Sherman’s conflagration. Better Men presents, for the first time, the story of this rural Georgia county and its relationship with the Vietnam War. From the twenty-three men who lost their lives to the more recent recognition and honoring of the men who served there, Coweta County’s connection with that unpopular war is profound and wide-ranging, involving agonizing tragedy while simultaneously embracing valor, courage, admiration, and respect.
These are the stories that most people don’t know or don’t remember; or thought they knew but never knew at all. The young men who were killed and the families who still grieve their loss. The Medal of Honor recipients. The adoption of a helicopter unit en route to Vietnam. The monuments and the roads. This is the Vietnam War seen through the eyes of one rural county in Georgia, but it is also a small-scale version of what happened across rural America. |
I worked on this book for more than ten years, but I know that there is more information, stories or photographs out there that need to be shared. If you have anything to add to this project, please contact me via the CONTACT link above. I am interested in anything about the twenty-three Coweta men who were killed in Vietnam. Any story or photographs about the 1968 Helicopter adoption, the Medal of Honor recipients, the visit of the Wall that Heals or the Vietnam War class would also be welcome. Please take the CONTACT item above or click the button below and let me hear from you!
